Questions
How many jobs should I apply to?
Enough to reach the interviews you need. About 3% of cold online applications reach an interview, so 3 interviews take about 100 applications. A tailored resume or a referral cuts that a lot. The calculator works it out for your numbers.
What is a normal interview rate for job applications?
For applications sent through job boards and career sites without a referral, about 3% (Ashby, CareerPlug and Huntr all land near it). Huntr measured 5.7% with a tailored resume, and Ashby 40% for referred candidates.
Should I apply to more jobs, or fewer and better ones?
Both count. Each application does better when the resume fits the job, but at a few in a hundred, the number you send still decides how soon the interviews come. Apply where you fit, and to enough of them.
Where do these numbers come from?
From reports published in 2025 and 2026: Ashby Talent Trends, the CareerPlug 2025 Recruiting Metrics Report and Huntr Job Search Trends for Q2 2026. Each one is linked under the calculator.
